Our Story

Born from wind. Woven by hand.

The Beginning

A cloak that crossed the sea

Qashabiya started with a question: Why are surfers wrapping themselves in synthetic fleece when centuries of wind-fighting wisdom already exist?

The Qashabiya — also written Kachabia or Kachabiya — is a traditional North African wool cloak, common across Tunisia and Algeria. Thick, hooded, minimal, and supremely functional against wind and cold. For over a thousand years, it has sheltered shepherds on high plateaus, travellers crossing mountain passes, and communities gathering on cool desert nights.

We didn't design this garment. The artisans of Kairouan perfected it centuries ago. What we did was recognize that the Atlantic coast of Portugal — with its cold winds, wild swells, and ritualistic surf culture — was the perfect second home for this cloak.

Craftsmanship

Every thread has a story

Our cloaks are made by artisan families in Kairouan, Tunisia — a city renowned for its textile heritage since the 9th century. The process hasn't changed much in a thousand years, and that's the point.

Wool is sourced from local flocks, hand-sheared in spring, then cleaned, carded, and spun by hand using drop spindles. This creates yarn with an organic, irregular quality no machine can replicate.

Weaving happens on traditional wooden looms. A single cloak takes approximately three days of continuous weaving. The fabric is then fulled — washed and agitated to create a denser, more wind-resistant material.

We pay fair wages, work directly with the artisans, and ensure every cloak carries their skill and pride. This isn't fast fashion. This is fashion that has been perfected over a millennium.

The Atlantic Connection

Where heritage meets the lineup

Portugal's surf coast — from Ericeira to Nazare — is defined by cold Atlantic winds, powerful swells, and a culture that values authenticity over trend. Surfers here are drawn to natural materials, slow fashion, and gear that respects the ocean.

The Qashabiya fits this ethos perfectly. It's naturally wind-resistant, temperature-regulating, and water-repellent. It drapes beautifully over a wetsuit. It ages with character rather than degrading into microplastics.

For centuries, trade routes connected North Africa to Iberia. Textiles, knowledge, and culture flowed across the Mediterranean. When we bring a Qashabiya to the cliffs of Ericeira, we're not creating a clash of cultures. We're completing a circle drawn centuries ago.
