Why Surfers are Choosing Wool Over Synthetic

The case for natural fibers in surf culture — and why the best post-surf warmth comes from sheep, not petroleum.

Walk into any surf shop and you'll find racks of polyester fleece, nylon windbreakers, and synthetic ponchos. They're lightweight, they're cheap, and they'll keep you warm for about a season before they start pilling, losing their shape, and shedding microplastics into every wash.

Now consider wool. Specifically, the dense, lanolin-rich wool used in traditional North African cloaks. It's naturally water-resistant — not waterproof, but able to shed light rain and sea spray. It regulates temperature, keeping you warm when it's cold and cool when it warms up. It resists odor naturally. And it lasts for decades, aging gracefully rather than degrading.

The surf community has always had a deep respect for the ocean. It's time our gear reflected that respect. When you choose a natural wool cloak over a synthetic poncho, you're making a choice that's better for the waves you love.
